There are many different soils in Gigondas, from the large alluvial terraces dating from the Mindelian era to the sandy- clay soils which stretch up to the foot of the Dentelles. Their high permeability prevents erosion by stream waters and allows rapid drainage of the different parcels of vines.
On the slopes, the vineyard is made up of terraces on marly-calcareous soils which provide magnificent scenery to walkers in the area. For the winemakers themselves, this complementarity between the soils and the scree-covered slopes enables the best infiltrations of rain water and helps the soils stock the sun’s energy overnight which in turn prolongs the vegetative activity of the plants. All these soils are rich in clay, one of the typical characteristics of « Grand Crus » terroir.
