Santa Duc

Here, wild and uncommon, a bird watches over the domain : the Grand-duc owl which sings, (known as « Canta duc » in Provencal), his name has become over time « Santa Duc ».

Gigondas. A Provencal vineyard of great repute since the Gallo-Roman period owing to its red wines so full of character. The wine-growers make themselves abide by a strict set of rules : a maximum yield fixed at 36 hl per hectare, sorting of the grapes so as to keep only the best… The grenache, mourvèdre, syrah and cinsault grape varieties of Santa-Duc grow in two types of earth : the one being on the calcareous marls of the Cretaceous period on the area of land behind Vieille (the hillside behind the old hospices of the village) ; the other being on the poor red stony clay soils of Quaternary period ; these areas are the Hautes garrigues, les Carbonnières, les Rocassières, Santa Duc, les Pailleroudas, les Goujard and Plane. The combination of these contrasting soils gives balanced wines, both full-bodied and yet elegant.

1874. The first buildings. Four generations have succeeded to the « Domain Santa Duc ». In turn, they each make their mark, raising the property up to being within the rank of the greatest of Gigondas. Generosity and willingness will be needed for the successions not to divide up the estate. Nowadays at last, the fruit of the work and the passion of this family is recognised throughout the entire world.

Respect. This governing word guides the decisions made by the wine-grower. He considers the plant a living being in a state of equilibrium with its environment. He cares for it with gentleness. He also endeavours to maintain biodiversity. The integral work of the soil, the care and respect of the foliage, disbudding, early harvesting, removal of the leaves… the ripe grapes are then picked by hand and gently crushed. They then macerate for a long time in order to give the wine its complex aromas, its coating of fine tannins… before being cultivated in wine barrels or large casks. At Santa Duc, they know how to keep it simple. The cold maceration of the harvests, fermentation with indigenous yeasts, cultivation on the lees, bottling without filtration… they also know how to apply new data found through research and to employ the best technicians.

Self-willed, this man who takes care of his vines. He watches over them with patience and passion. Exactly as we would a child to whom we have promised the brightest of futures. Sharp, his eye observes nature untiringly. He takes his time to predict the vintage that is taking form. Proud, this craftsman who insists on working on noble matter. He looks for the most accurate and also the gentlest of tools. He considers each step as important as the final product.

Intense, at last, the pleasure of sharing, the conviviality around a glass of wine. The well-being of the senses and of the spirit. This ultimate step gives man direction in his daily work.

Respectful, this wine-grower of the earth that he has inherited and which he will pass on, in turn, to his children.

Without haste. Leaving himself time to observe, adapting his thorough cultural practices, repeating them as many times as necessary. Then, giving the wine time to evolve. This is one of the secrets. This daily labour, whilst rigorous, has also a great care for detail. The wine-grower gives sense to each gesture. Day after day, he constructs his work of art.
